Afonso started his studies in drawing and painting at Escola Guignard, in Belo Horizonte. In Rio de Janeiro, he studied along with artists Daniel Senise, Charles Watson and Carlos Zilio at Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage. In 2011 he got a RIO ARTE scholarship and started making sculptures. The exhibition "Perna de Três", at Galeria Paulo Fernandes (Rio de Janeiro), 2002, and at Centro Cultural Maria Antonia (São Paulo), 2003, is relevant in the artist's course, when sculptures started integrating enormous installations and wood became his main material. Among his solo exhibitions are the ones at Galeria Millan (São Paulo), 2015; at Casa França Brasil (Rio de Janeiro), 2014; at MAM (Rio de Janeiro), 2011; and at MAC (Niterói), 2009. The installation "Cidade pequena", in which stubs and pieces of wood got geometric shapes, creating a small-sized city, was shown at Galeria Lurix (Rio de Janeiro), 2005, and at Galeria Virgílio (São Paulo), 2006. Afonso Tostes also participated in group exhibitions in Brazil and abroad, in institutions like Foundation 3,14 (Bergen, Norway), 1999; Culturgest (Lisbon, Portugal), 2000; Instituto Tomie Ohtake (São Paulo), 2010; and Museu da Casa Brasileira (São Paulo), 2009. He also participated in the V Bienal do Mercosul (Porto Alegre), 2005.
